Togakushi-Shrine

The Togakushi Shrine is deeply intertwined with an old legend of Amano-Iwato, the Cave of the Sun Goddess. Located at the base of the sacred Mount Togakushi, worshipers have visited Togakushi Shrine since ancient times. From the Heian Period (794 to 1185), the shrines of the sacred mountains of Mt. Togakushi, Mt. Hiei, and Mt. Koya became known as training halls of the Shugendo faith, which continues today. Togakushi Shrine consists of five shrines: Okusha, Chusha, Hokosha, Kuzuryusha, and Hinomikosha. The lower shrine, Hokosha, houses the oldest building. The goddess Ame-no-uzume no Mikoto is enshrined at Hinomikosha. Chusha features 3 huge cedar trees that are more than 800 years old. Okusha shrine boasts rows of old giant cedar trees that are over 400 years old and massive torii gates. Okusha, which is next to the Shrine of the Nine-Headed Dragon, was used as a training hall in 849. These sites include various well know “power spots” and are visited by people from all over the country.
