Matsumoto is also known for local specialties that use pure spring water including Yoikana Shuzo sake and Genchi-no-Soba buckwheat noodles. Many tourists from Japan and around the world visit Matsumoto Castle and the surrounding castle town. Matsumoto Castle is a national treasure and is the oldest five-tiered wooden castle since the Warring States Period (1467 to 1568). The cherry blossom season offers a unique spectacle when the surrounding cherry trees around the castle are lit up at night creating a beautiful and memorable event. In Matsumoto, also known as Migakubu, which means the city of learning, mountaineering, and music. Various events are held throughout the city year-round at art museums that reflect the history and culture of Matsumoto. In addition the beautiful mountain ranges offer many more opportunities to enjoy nature.
